Indicators of Student Success
The following qualities are good indicators of student success in online courses, although the lack of one or two does not necessarily mean that a student can't succeed.
- Computer access. Student has adequate access to a reliable computer with an Internet connection.
- Keyboarding skills. Except in beginning keyboarding classes, student has good keyboarding skills.
- Computer experience. Student has experience with computers, and has gone through an online-learning orientation.
- Self-motivation. Student has a high level of self-motivation in general or a high level of motivation to succeed in the course being considered.
- Reading skills. Student enjoys reading or is motivated to read on the given topic. Student should be able to read at the grade level recommended for the course being considered.
- Writing skills. Student writes at or above the grade level recommended for the course being considered, and either enjoys writing or is motivated to write on the given topic.
- Problem-solving skills. Student likes to problem solve and does not give up easily in the face of a challenge. If a challenge cannot be solved, student is proactive in seeking assistance.
- Math skills. For math courses, student has a solid understanding of any prerequisites and the willingness to put in effort to understand and/or figure out concepts and problems.
- Follows directions. Student is able to read and follow directions independently.
- Takes responsibility. Student is responsible when it comes to fulfilling requirements, meeting deadlines, and turning in work without frequent reminders.
