Katrina: Heroism and Depravity

In the midst of such an enormous tragedy, with seemingly endless damage and looters running the streets, it's important to remember that just as tragedy brings out the worst in some, it brings out the best in others.

Countless stories have come out recently about the heroism of normal individuals coming together to do their part in helping the relief efforts. As soon as he heard about the tragedy, one man loaded his truck full of food and clothing and drove down to Louisiana to help whoever he found. A young boy in New Orleans found the keys to his school's buses, and drove one of the buses around the city gathering refugees. One church group in the dome in New Orleans refused to leave until everyone else had been evacuated first. Many people have left their jobs and their lives to dedicate their time to the Red Cross.

Below are photos of some of the relief efforts.

Countless companies, organizations, and individuals have already donated millions to the relief fund of the Red Cross. It's important to remember that for every act of violence we hear about on the news, hundreds more acts of heroism, large or small, go unnoticed by the population at large.
