Biodiesel Fuels
Biodiesel is the term for vegetable oil used for fuel in diesel engines. It can be mixed with petroleum diesel, or used straight. I got to thinking about biodiesel because a friend of mine runs his old diesel Volkswagen Jetta on it. His dad makes the biodiesel out of used frying oil from McDonalds, and ethanol. It's hillarious when he pulls in and out of the driveway, because his car actually emits the strong and distinctive odor of french fries!
Right now, the biggest hindrance to an explosion in biodiesel popularity is the production cost (which remains slightly higher than petroleum) and the lack of soybean production in the US. (Soybeans are the most common plant from which vegetable oil is derived)
